Smart Lighting Control for Cincinnati Homes

The right lighting changes how a home feels at every hour. Bright and energetic in the morning. Focused for evening work. Warm and low for entertaining. Soft pathways at night. That’s what real lighting control delivers — and what we’ve been installing since 1988.

Layered Lighting Design

A Well-Lit Room Has Three Layers

Real lighting design isn’t about brightness — it’s about layers. We design all three per room, with dimmers on every circuit and scenes that combine the right layers for the right moment.

01

Ambient Layer

Overall room illumination — recessed cans, ceiling fixtures, large pendants. The base layer that lets you move safely and gives the room its general feel.

Examples: Recessed cans · Ceiling lights · Pendants

02

Task Layer

Lighting for specific work — kitchen counters, desk lamps, reading lights, bathroom vanities. Each task layer is dimmable separately for full control.

Examples: Under-cabinet · Desk lamps · Vanity lights

03

Accent Layer

Drawing attention to architecture, art, or features — picture lights, tape lighting under cabinets, sconces, landscape lighting visible through windows.

Examples: Picture lights · Sconces · Landscape spots

Common Questions

Lighting Control FAQs

Can I retrofit lighting control in my existing home?

Yes. For most homes, Lutron RadioRA 3 is the best retrofit option — wireless, replaces existing dimmers and switches, no new wiring required.

How is lighting control different from smart bulbs?

Smart bulbs put intelligence in each bulb. Lighting control puts intelligence in the dimmer and switch. Works with any LED, doesn’t need bulb replacement, scales to whole-home use far better.

Will my lighting work with Control4 or Josh.ai?

Yes. Lutron integrates natively with Control4 and Josh.ai. We commonly install Lutron for the lighting layer and Control4/Josh.ai for the broader smart home.

How long does installation take?

Caseta retrofit, 4-6 rooms: 1 day. Whole-home RadioRA 3, 15-25 rooms: 3-7 days. Luxury HomeWorks during new construction: 2-4 weeks alongside electrical.

Lighting Control in Real Cincinnati Homes

What Changes When the Lights Are Designed, Not Just Installed

Most Cincinnati homes have far more light fixtures than switches, and every switch is a compromise: one bank of cans for the whole great room, a wall of toggles at the mudroom door, a dining room chandelier that is either surgery-bright or off. Lighting control replaces that with scenes. “Morning” brings the kitchen up to full and the family room to half. “Entertain” warms everything and drops the cans over the TV. “Goodnight” walks the house down from one keypad by the bed. The fixtures are the same — what changes is that the house finally knows what you meant.

We install two platforms depending on the house. Lutron RadioRA 3 is the workhorse for retrofits across Hyde Park, Indian Hill, Mason, and Anderson Township: wireless dimmers that replace your existing switches with no new wiring, engraved keypads, and shades on the same system. Lutron HomeWorks and Control4 lighting are what we specify for new construction and larger homes, where a centralized panel replaces banks of switches entirely and every load is tunable from day one.

Two things separate a lighting job that people love from one they tolerate. First, tunable white: DMF and ProLuxe fixtures that shift from cool morning light to warm evening light on their own, which matters more in an Ohio January than anyone expects. Second, the programming. We build the scenes with you in the house, live with them for two weeks, and then refine them — because “movie” in a Loveland basement is not “movie” in a Madeira family room with west-facing windows.

Lighting Questions

Lighting Control FAQs for Cincinnati Homeowners

Do I have to rewire my house for lighting control?

No. Lutron RadioRA 3 replaces your existing switches and dimmers in place, using the wiring already in the wall. Centralized systems like HomeWorks or Control4 panels are best done during a new build or major remodel, but a retrofit in a finished Cincinnati home rarely requires opening walls.

What does lighting control cost?

Starter Lutron Caséta systems start around $2,500 installed. A whole-home Lutron RadioRA or HomeWorks system with keypads, dimmers, and shade integration generally runs $10,000 to $40,000 or more depending on the number of loads. Architectural fixtures are priced per fixture plus design. See our pricing page for the full ranges.

Will it work with Alexa, Google, and my existing smart devices?

Yes. Lutron and Control4 both integrate with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Josh.ai. If you already have Sonos, a Ring doorbell, or a Nest thermostat, they can join the same scenes.

What happens when the internet goes down?

Lighting keeps working. Lutron and Control4 run locally in the house; the cloud is only used for remote access from your phone when you are away.

Can you tune the lights to be warmer at night?

Yes — that is tunable white, and we specify it on most new projects. Fixtures shift color temperature through the day automatically, so the kitchen is bright and cool at 7 AM and warm and low at 9 PM without anyone touching a switch.
