Theater Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a home theater install take?

For a dedicated room: 8-16 weeks from design to first viewing, depending on construction scope. For a multi-purpose family room theater: 2-4 weeks total.

What does a Cincinnati home theater cost?

Entry-level dedicated theaters start around $10,000. A mid-range Cincinnati theater with a 4K projector, motorized screen, surround sound, and tiered seating typically lands in the $25,000–$80,000 range. High-end Dolby Atmos theaters with acoustic treatment, laser projection, and premium seating can run $75,000 to $250,000+. Pricing depends heavily on room construction, acoustic treatment, and the gear you select — see our pricing page for full ranges.

Do you work with our builder and architect?

Yes — we coordinate routinely with Cincinnati-area builders, architects, and interior designers. Pre-wiring during framing is a fraction of the cost of retrofitting.

Can the theater also work as a family room?

Yes. Many clients want a multi-use room — theater quality when the lights go down, normal family room during the day. We design for the dual-mode use.

Home Theater vs. Media Room

Which One Your Cincinnati Home Needs — and How We Design Each

“Home theater installation” covers two very different rooms, and getting the right one matters more than any piece of gear. A dedicated home theater is a room with one job: a projector and a 120-inch-plus acoustically transparent screen, Dolby Atmos speakers behind and above, tiered seating, treated walls, and no windows. A media room is the family room, great room, or lower-level lounge that also has to work at 2 PM on a Saturday — a large Sony or Samsung display instead of a projector, Sonance in-wall speakers you cannot see, a soundbar-free surround layout, and Lutron lighting scenes that turn it into a theater when the sun goes down. Most Cincinnati homes we visit in Hyde Park, Anderson Township, Mason, and Northern Kentucky want the second one; the dedicated rooms are usually finished lower levels in Indian Hill, Montgomery, and Loveland.

Media room design starts with sightlines and light. We size the display to the seating distance, place speakers where the room can hide them, and manage daylight with motorized shades before we ever talk about the receiver. Dedicated theater design starts with the room: riser heights, screen wall depth for behind-screen speakers, HVAC noise, and where the rack lives. In both cases the wiring is planned for the next display, not just this one.

What you get from Phantom Sound that a big-box install cannot provide: a calibrated system. Every channel is measured and tuned in the finished room, the projector or display is color-calibrated, and the whole thing runs from one Control4 or Josh.ai remote that the kids and the babysitter can operate. We have been building theaters in Cincinnati since 1988, and we service the ones other companies installed.

Media Room Questions

Media Room & Home Theater FAQs

What is the difference in cost between a media room and a dedicated theater?

A media room built around a large display, hidden surround speakers, and lighting control usually lands well under a dedicated theater because there is no projection, screen, riser, or acoustic construction. Entry-level dedicated theaters start around $10,000; mid-range theaters run $25,000–$80,000. See our pricing page.

Can a media room have a projector?

Yes, with the right light control. A bright laser projector and an ambient-light-rejecting screen work in a family room if the windows have blackout shades; otherwise a large display is the better daytime choice.

Do I need a dedicated room for Dolby Atmos?

No. In-ceiling Atmos speakers work in a media room as well as a theater. The dedicated room simply lets us treat the acoustics and control the light completely.

Can you upgrade the theater I already have?

Yes. New projector, new processor, Atmos speakers in the ceiling, or a full recalibration — we take over systems other companies installed all the time.

Do you do TV mounting and soundbar installs too?

Yes. Not every room needs a theater. Wall-mounted displays with concealed cabling and a proper soundbar or in-wall speakers are a large part of our work across Greater Cincinnati.
