Retrofit Your Home with Motorized (Automated) Window Treatments

blog

Technology advancements have brought new forms of automation into our homes that were thought impossible just a few years ago. One type has become particularly popular: Window shades.

For many, window shades, blinds and drapes are both a necessary and desirable investment. They block the sun, keeping our homes cool and provide privacy, while also adding to the décor of our homes.

So, if you're looking to add automated window treatments but don't want to sacrifice your existing ones, Phantom Sound has the solutions.

MOTORIZED OPTIONS

Adding motorized shades is a relatively easy process. They are powered by four options. Opening and closing the shades can be achieved through several different methods.

HIGH-VOLTAGE MOTORIZED SHADES

These shades are powered by a motor that is hard-wired into the home's 120-Volt electrical system. This type of system provides a constant power source. The advantage of this system is that as long as there is power in the home, the blinds will work.

When selecting the right high-voltage motorized shade, be sure to consider the location of the power source. It's important to note that even though these shades are hard-wired to the home's electricity, they are still controlled through a wireless protocol.

LOW-VOLTAGE MOTORIZED SHADES – HARD-WIRED

These shades are driven by a quiet, low-profile, 12- or 24-Volt DC motor. The power source for this type of system requires a transformer to convert the 120-volt AC power. Most 12- or 24-Volt systems come with a transformer in the cube-shaped wall plug. Low-voltage motorized shades offer the same automation capabilities found in other motorized shades and are controlled through a wireless protocol.

LOW-VOLTAGE MOTORIZED SHADES – BATTERY-POWERED

This option offers the same quiet, low-profile 12- or 24-Volt DC motor. But instead of being able to plug it into the wall, this system is powered by batteries. The best use for this type of system is when AC power is not available. Of course, the drawback is that the batteries will need to be charged regularly. This can be anywhere 6-18 months depending on the amount of use. This type of shade is also controlled through a wireless protocol.

TRUE POWER OVER ETHERNET - TRUE POE

A True PoE motorized shade system is connected using a single ethernet cable. This one cable can provide not just control, but also power to the motorized shade. This is an advantage over other motorized units that require two cables: One for control and one for power.

The ethernet cable is plugged into a controller that connects to the internet. Homeowners can operate the system through an app on their smartphone, a remote or a wall switch.

WORKING WITH PHANTOM SOUND

Choosing the integration professional can make all the difference. When retrofitting your home with motorized shades, we bring the same philosophy we use when adding audio or video capabilities: The end-result should be experienced and enjoyed without seeing the physical apparatus. If the physical equipment is seen it draws attention to itself, thus spoiling the experience.

That design ethos is even more important when adding automation to window treatments, because they are SEEN.

If you're looking for an integrator with the quality of product, the technology and the integration philosophy, consider Phantom Sound.
