Home Security and AI

blog

Technology has impacted nearly every part of our personal and professional lives. Just when we get used to a new breakthrough and begin to widely adopt it, something new comes along to surpass it. That's the case with home automation and security, and the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In the last 15 years, security systems benefitted from Wi-Fi technology and the internet which allowed independent components such as cameras and motion detectors to be tied together wirelessly into a single system. There was no longer a need to run wires through a home or office to complete a security system.

Now, with the advent of AI, security systems are going to the next level.

AI Technology and Security Systems

AI has been used in security systems for some time. Most of us would recognize the term, "Facial Recognition." That system uses software to look at faces from a video feed and match them to those stored in a database. Facial recognition software establishes data points on the image of a face, measuring the distance between the eyes, nose, mouth and the shape of a face.

With AI, we can do much more. Today's systems can detect movement and the AI software can determine from the video image if that movement was caused by an animal, a human or some other object such as a flag waiving in the breeze. If it was a human, then notifications can be triggered.

Setting Home Security Boundaries

Another advantage of an AI system is the ability to set boundaries on your property. For example, let's assume that you want to be notified when cars pull up your driveway, but you don't care about those cars that are simply using your drive as a turn around. In the system, you can create perimeters, essentially identifying those areas that will be included in the security watch zone.

Of course, anything outside of the boundary will not be part of the zone, so you won't be notified if movement is detected there. Thus, if the boundary is set properly, cars turning around in the driveway won't trigger a notification.

The ability to set boundaries is pretty handy if you have a neighbor close to you, live on a busy street, or have a park or walking trail beside your property.

Our Home Security Systems

Phantom Sound can install security systems that feature Ring doorbells and additional cameras if needed. The Ring devices have motion detection built into them and don't require additional detection devices.

Ring doorbells and cameras offer superb HD video, proven performance and customization. There is a drawback, though. Ring and Amazon, the two companies that manufacture the doorbells, actually own the video from their devices. The homeowner does not. So, it is possible that the video could be used for other purposes by Ring.

So, a good rule of thumb when using Ring devices is to remember that what happens in the backyard may not necessarily stay in the backyard.

Network Video Recorder

Phantom Sound can also install higher-end equipment for those who want to own and control the security video created on their property. That video can be stored on a Network Video Recorder (NVR). This device is essentially a hard drive kept on your property. The video can reside here until needed or can be erased for future video storage.

This method offers more privacy and control to the homeowner and harkens back to an earlier time before the cloud, when security video was kept on physical media.
